Picking your tarot card focus for 2010

Ever since I learned this exercise in a tarot class (Thanks, Cheryl!), I’ve continued it every year and I’d like to share it with you.

Just before the new year starts, I select a major arcana card to focus on throughout the upcoming year. I pull the card by asking, “What do I need to be focusing on this year?” For 2010 I pulled The Star from the Paulina Tarot.

How I will focus on it is through a meditation that’s a lot of fun. It’ll not only gives me greater insight into the card, it leads me through some much needed self discovery as well. Here’s how it works:

First you select a major arcana card from any deck you like. You may want to have a journal handy when you do this. Documenting will help refresh your memory on it months later.

Next, sit back and stare at the card for a moment, memorizing the elements in it. Then close your eyes and imagine it growing big enough so you can step inside it.

Here’s a nice visual example of entering a card: the opening sequence of Carnivale:

Once you are inside the card, take note of how it has come to life. What does the air feel like inside it? What about the ground? Any sounds? Smells? Spend a moment just looking around and really seeing the card. Then go where your intuition pulls you. Visit with the elements of  the card. Talk to them. In my case I would maybe talk to the frog, the woman, or the bird (or over repeat visits, all three). Sometimes you will find they have messages or gifts for you too. Don’t forget to thank them for whatever they give you! :)

At some point you will feel yourself leaving the card. Once you do, allow yourself a moment to reflect upon your experience. Then if you have that journal nearby, capture what happened in your journal.

Throughout the year, do this meditation again with the same card. It may even be months that pass between meditations and that’s okay. You’ll know when it feels right to go into it again. It’s an awesome journey and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! :D

    Hi Jen,

    What a great exercise!

I couldn’t believe that I pulled the Hierophant (see the post above “Synchronicity – My Tarot Card Focus for 2010 “) after finding out that 5 was also my number for the year (based on my numerology forecast). I’ll be looking to this card in the future this year and it will be interesting to see what happens.

    Cheers, Nicole

I can’t believe you pulled a 5 card and have a 5 year ahead of you. It’s funny how they all sync up. My friend and I just did readings for the new year and we both had our year number showing up all over the place! Good luck and have fun! I look forward to seeing how your journey goes. :)
